The cruise, sponsored by Scott and Jennifer Doelling, starts in Travelers Rest, heads to Upper Whitewater Falls over the NC state line and ends with lunch at Whiteside Brewing Company in Cashiers, NC. Return on your own.
- Meet at Wal-Mart, 8 Benton Road, Travelers Rest, SC on the upper lot on the garden center side.
- 9:00 AM - Turn right out of the parking lot onto Benton Road. At the light, turn left onto State Park Road. At the light turn right onto Highway 25.
- At the next traffic light, turn left onto Hawkins Road. (George Coleman Ford is on the corner). At stop sign, turn left onto N. Poinsett Highway. Stay right at the Y onto Center Street (.4 miles).
- At the traffic light turn right onto Highway 276/N. Main Street. Proceed to the Ingles, 1500 Geer Highway, on the right to regroup (2.2 miles).
- Continue on Highway 276 to the light at the intersection of Route 288 Table Rock Road (3 miles – Spinx on the corner). Turn left onto Rt 288.
- Follow Rt 288 through Pumpkintown to Rt 178 (15 miles).
- Right turn onto Rt 178 to the four-way stop at Highway 11.
- Left turn onto Highway 11. Continue on Highway 11 for approximately 11.5 miles, crossing into Oconee County.
- Regroup at Lakeshop Gas Store on the right after the entrance to The Cliffs on the right.
- Continue on Highway 11 to Route 130 East (approx 2.9 miles). You will pass a blue sign for Twice a Town Taproom on the right. The turn onto Route 130 East is coming up.
- Right turn onto Route 130E noting a sign for Whitewater Falls.
- Follow Route 130E to cross over SC/NC state line (approx 10.2 miles). Look for Bad Creek Rd on the right before the SC/NC line. Turn for the Falls is the next right. (SC 130 becomes NC 281).
- Turn right into Whitewater Falls (entrance to Whitewater Falls is not well marked). Here is a pic of the sign on the left side of the road where you turn right.
- There is paved parking and a $3 fee to enter the park to see the Falls. There is a paved ½ mile trail to the Falls overlook. There are 154 steps down to the lower overlook. Public restrooms are available. We will spend about 45 minutes here.
- Leaving the Falls parking lot, turn right onto NC 281.
- Proceed on NC 281 until US 64 to Cashiers (approx 9 miles).
- Regroup, if needed, at Ingles on the right as you enter Cashiers (approx 9 miles).
- Turn right at the light at US 64 and Route 107. Continue on Route 107 for less than ¼ mile to Whiteside Brewing Company on the right.128 State Route 107, Cashiers NC. Phone number - (828) 743-6000. Steeply inclined, paved driveway with a level, gravel parking lot that has large potholes. Exit is difficult!!!!! Poor sightline, minimal clearance. Suggest to turn right to turn around in adjacent shopping area.
- Alternate parking areas are available adjacent to the brewery and many members chose that option the last time the club took this cruise.
